Transmitter is pleased to present A Discourse of Accord, a group exhibition featuring works by Daqi Fanq, Daonne Huff, Karolina Majewska, and Leila Seyedzadeh.
The artist's gesture is here totalized and viewed under the lens of piety, a literal devotion to the ontological landscape that sustains ‘them’.
Systems transmogrify in the work and performances, particularly art but more intentionally corporeal rights, technocratic and political influences on identity structure, and the obvious survival/subsistence of the artist.
What sustains the artist, physically, ecologically, spiritually, is the echo, the concord braiding the artists and work together, as well as the remaining discord produced from what is complicit, resistant, ameliorative or anathema to ‘the artist’.
Through performance, light, form, and macroscopic interpretation, systems and tropes become a discursive landscape to navigate the contemporary, the pith of the sticky matter being ‘what is a sustaining practice’ to a mother, artist, daughter, partner, member, owner, romantic-sexual-familial-national-identity?
About the artists:
Daqi Fang is a Wuhan, China born New York-based visual artist. As a multimedia artist, he uses photography, film, 3D imagery, and language to explore landscape and its emotional resonance while also looking for poetry in contemporary life. His work often draws upon stories and themes found in literature and current events that center on place/situation as a site of metaphor and symbolism.
Daonne Huff is an arts administrator, performance-centered artist, poet, and Black modern flâneuse. Born and raised in Birmingham, AL but having lived above the Mason Dixon Line her entire adult life, Huff’s practice is rooted in observation, vulnerability, process, synchronicity, inviting the inside outside and rendering the invisible visible. She is one-half of the performance art duo Hot Hands.
Karolina Majewska is a visual artist based in Warsaw, Poland. In her current work, Majewska creates intimate, imperfect casts of the body which act as metaphors for the shattering events of the last eighteen months. Through her sculptures, she aims to explore the “politics of the human body” in terms of objectification and repression. She uses beeswax for its organic quality: soft and mutable like the human flesh. The material is collected from local beekeepers, located in the Polish countryside.
Leila Seyedzadeh is an Iranian interdisciplinary artist based in New York. Seyedzadeh’s work addresses imaginary landscapes and focuses on natural subjects such as mountains extracted from the subconscious. It is as if she is attaching pieces of her memories, and by doing so, she is destroying their meaning, thus creating a landscape immersed in placelessness.
